What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a customized restoration that is designed to protect a damaged or decayed tooth. Also known as a cap, it covers the visible portion of a tooth so that reinfection or future injury does not occur.

Dental crowns can be made from an array of materials ranging from porcelain-fused-to-metal, EMAX, zirconia, porcelain, and gold. Depending on the location of the tooth in question as well as the status of your oral health, our dentist will recommend the appropriate material for successful results.

Do I Need Dental Crowns?

Cracked teeth, tooth decay, and other serious damage can be strong indicators that you need a dental crown. However, you will be required to undergo a thorough examination by a member of our team before moving forward with this kind of restorative service.

Other reasons you might be considered for dental crowns include:

  • Broken teeth
  • The expansion of a filling that damages the crown of a tooth
  • You received a root canal and need proper protection for your treated tooth
  • You had a dental implant put into place to replace a missing tooth
  • Extreme tooth decay that penetrates beyond the enamel

The Dental Crown Process

When receiving a dental crown, your dentist must first administer local anesthesia to ensure that the tooth is numb and you feel no pain throughout the minor procedure. After clearing out the decayed or damaged portions of the structure, we will need to fill it with a composite resin that blends into your natural tooth shade as well as creates a tight seal.

Once the resin is hardened, we will alter the tooth so that a dental crown will properly fit into place. But before a finalized version is possible, digital impressions must be taken and sent to a local laboratory for fabrication.

In the meantime, you will wear a temporary crown that will safeguard your smile in between appointments. Once your permanent crown is ready, you will return to have your temporary one removed, and your new restoration will be secured into place.
